Crime in Italy: Although there are very few violent crimes, pilferings, wallets, bags and car robberies are common. Most of these nonviolent crimes happen in the crowded tourist zones, where pickpockets take advantage of the tumult to commit their misdeeds.
Security: Occasionally there are episodes of political violence in Italy, usually related to the internal problems or social protests, such as during the demonstration against the G8 in Genoa during 2001.
Some tips: Those travellers who wish to have a stay without problems, are advised to follow few basic rules :
* the best way to handle money is through traveller checks, and change as it is needed;
* as far as possible, leave value objects (jewelry, traveller checks, credit cards, airplane tickets, etc) in a safe-deposit box of the hotel or place where you are lodging. It is also possible to find companies that offer a service of safe-deposit boxes in the Yellow Pages.
* Do not leave luggage in a car without watching.
* Hire a travel insurance to cover the expenses of any loss or robbery that you may have.
